Zachary Marchun was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado. He served for four years as an infantryman and reconnaissance Marine and participated in several deployments to the Mediterranean and Haiti. During a brief break in service, he worked as a commercial fisherman in New England. In 2001, after the attacks on 9/11, he enlisted in the Air Force and began the Pararescue training pipeline in January 2002. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the 38th Rescue Squadron (RQS) at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. While at the 38th RQS, he deployed on multiple occasions as a combat search and rescue team member and team leader. In May 2006, he assessed and was selected for the 24thSpecial Tactics Squadron (STS) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He spent the next 12 years conducting special operations missions around the world. During his time at the 24thSTS, he served as a team leader, OTC instructor, and troop chief. Zach recently earned an undergraduate degree in Peace, War and Defense and will begin graduate studies towards a masters in social work. Zach, his wife Megan, and their two children live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
